Design / Fabrication / Installation

Selected work / 01

Original work.
One standard.

Some commissions begin with an architectural problem. Others begin with an image, an object, or an unfinished idea. Each is developed the same way: understand the site, resolve the design, and build a piece that belongs there. Selected commissions in Hot Springs and the surrounding region.

Custom work / 02

Original commissions and statement pieces.

Signs, lighting, sculptural pieces, and work that does not fit a catalog. Each starts with a point of view and is developed as a complete steel object.

Architectural work / 03

Gates, rails, and architectural steel.

Installed work is designed around the architecture, the hand, and the way a property is used. Proportion, transitions, anchorage, finish, and installation are resolved as one design problem.

Design language / 04

The pattern is part of the structure.

Historic references, natural geometry, layered depth, and visible fabrication are tools, not applied decoration. I use the ones that belong to the site. The final form still has to cut cleanly, assemble accurately, and hold up in use.

In the making / 05

Finished work starts in the details.

Fit-up, layered parts, cut quality, and finish all affect the final result. I handle those decisions as part of the design.

Process / 06

From idea to installed steel.

01

Site

Measure the conditions, understand the use, and identify the architectural language already present.

02

Design

Resolve proportion, pattern, material, connections, and finish as one proposal.

03

Fabricate

Translate the approved design into controlled CAD, CNC-plasma-cut components, fitted assemblies, and hand-finished steel.

04

Install

Fit the work to the property and complete the final alignment, attachment, and finish.

Studio / 07

Directly involved from first conversation to final installation.

One of One Fabrication is the Hot Springs studio of Daniel Melendez Jr. I work directly with property owners, builders, and design professionals to develop original steelwork for existing architecture and singular objects. Every commission stays close to the bench, from site conditions and drawing through fabrication, finish, and installation.

Project inquiries / 08

Start with what you know.

Send a few photographs, the general property location, and what the piece needs to accomplish. If the project fits the studio, I will respond with the next useful step, usually a site conversation or design consultation.
